Our Interior Material’s class went on another field trip this past week to All About Looks here in Lubbock. They are a full service, upscale interior fabric retail store. They provide full workroom services and stock several interior fabrics including cottons, silks, indoor and outdoor materials, and polyester blends. It is family owned and operated by Nancy, the mother, and her daughters Lindsey and Paige.
The three of them began by explaining some of the different fabrics they offer and facts about each particular fabric. In addition, we learned of all the services they offer and how anyone can come in there and they will work with them to design and create whatever is specified for their client. The only limitation to the work they can do is limited to the imagination.
They showed us some basic fabrics them moved towards more intricate and nicer fabrics. They even have some fabrics now that are made from the back flaps of tires of eighteen wheelers, which was very interesting to see. We learned again about the different ways fabrics can have designs on them, printed or dyed. And they showed us some new linen that is becoming more and more popular this year.
All About Looks told us about the new trends in fabrics which are leading towards more natural fibers and it should be interesting to see where designs go to now within interior materials. Next, they talked to us about the durability of a fabric. We learned that just because a material is heavy does not make it durable and able to withstand a lot and hold together for a long time. Instead people and designers a like need to understand that how tightly woven the fabric is or how many double rubs it has.
I learned a lot of new things about fabrics and fibers, in addition to experiencing a whole new atmosphere of an interior materials show room. Nancy and her daughters were extremely helpful and entertaining on this field trip.
